First Ride in Two Weeks

Stinky Momma finally came home. She has been gone for 2 weeks straight and left me alone with Stinky Baby. Well, I did have tons of help from Stinky Nanny and the Stinky Grandparents. But, I am glad she is back!

I have not been riding since the Tsali Trip. That break along with the terrible diet I have been on in Stinky Momma's absence have not been good for my fitness. Boy, could I tell today. It was all a could do to pump out 15 miles on an easy course. But I had a great time. 

My buddy G talked me into riding with and iPod. What a difference it makes. Nothing like a Shuffle loaded with The Police, The Peppers, and U2 to make everything all right! 

Glad to be on the bike again.    

Got in 40.7 on Friday!

I know I am posting a couple of days late. I got in a 40.7 mile ride on Friday!

It took 2.5 hours of ride time at a 15.5 mph pace. I was worn out and covered in dried salt. I also seemed to be fighting a headwind for 20 miles.

Anyway this was my first time over 40 miles. I haven't had much ride time in the last 2 weeks either.   

 

Got in 30 Miles this AM

It's been very hot here the last couple of days so I woke up early and got 30 miles in this morning before I had to be back home. I had planned on 40+ but ran out of time. Maybe tomorrow.

I tried the same route Monday afternoon but could only make it half way in the 95F heat. I put in 125 miles last week and want to beat that this week. I am going to need to get on it

My normal loop takes me down along the river. I got a couple of pictures this AM.

Good Grief I am BEAT but I Did Get Great Feedback on a Couple of Brews

MT drug me to a group ride tonight. I was too tired to go but didn't want to listen to all the crap if I backed out. So off I went with dead legs after last night's 33 miler. I'd say there were 50 riders their. I'd also say that all 50 of them looked like they were in much better shape than I am. Uh oh...

Fortunately MT took pity and took us on a little easier route than the "fast pack". (I am still trying to figure out why I ended up chasing that group even though it was only for a mile!). Lot's of hills that I am not used to climbing. Then a 4 mile climb up Buffalo Mountain. I stopped a couple of time to stretch because my calves were cramping. Talk about a dose of realty! Anyway we put in 29 miles and I don't think I would have made it without him talking me through it. 

He did say that he had tried the Tatum's Tail Pale Ale PM that I dropped off and thought it was great. So did the person he was drinking it with. Don't worry, more beer for you after today's tow!

  

33.5 Miles!! What could it be?

I went to the bike shop today to have them check out the shifter on my road bike. As usual I came back with something new. I had been running MTB pedals, no longer. I picked up a new set of road shoes and a new set of pedals. I am glad Hampton Trails is 20 miles away!!!

I got a quick refresher on shifting while there. I came home ready to ride, try out my new shoes, and refreshed knowledge. For some reason I decided to raise my seat 1/2" as well.

33.5 miles later and I feel pretty good. I might have been able to go a little longer but I was running out of water and daylight. My right calf did start to cramp a little but I was able to ride through it. 

I am guessing the major player is raising my seat. Much better extension and my thighs are not even close to burning as much as they were after yesterday's 14 mile ride. Shifting would be next. I paid much closer attention to what gear I was pulling. This helped me spin a little more and mash a little less. I'll say the pedals helped too.

I'm ready to try for 40!  

 

Need A Little Luck or Maybe a Clue

I had planned a long ride this evening. No luck, thunderstorms. I got in just under 14 miles but at a really slow pace. My legs just didn't have any energy today. Anyway, I had just pulled into a gas station when the lightning hit. My buddy G called, he had finished riding so he came to pick me up.

For some unknown reason I took my brand new Cateye wireless computer off to put my bike in his car. I left it where I laid it down. I was home before I realized what I had done. I ran back to the gas station to find it just where I left it but it had been run over. OUCH! 

I've had the road bike 3 weeks and gone through 2 tires, 3 tubes, and a computer ....  

27.5 Miles Before Work!

MT took me for a ride this AM before work. Longest ride yet. 27.5 miles at a 14.8 mile clip. Not bad for my third week of riding. He did take it easy on me. He could have easily punished me if he wanted too.

He did give me a rash of crap about my Camel Back. He said I was on the road not the trail. I guess he's right. I really didn't drink all of my water bottles. I'll be picking up a seat bag for my tube and pump...

This was my second 20+ miler this week. I put in 22 on Wednesday night. Eventhough I am SLOW, I am starting to get used to the saddle again.

Hopefully I can round up G &TP and we can hit the trail tomorrow. I am ready to see if I can pull my old MTB.

First 20 & a Ride with Ole TP

I took my first 20 mile ride on Saturday. It took me about an hour and a half. I do not know the exact information because I accidentally reset my computer. Oops! I know it did take less time to get back than it did to get out. I felt pretty good and will try to top 30 miles next weekend.  

TP surfaced on Sunday and we rode a quick 11.4 miles at a 15.3 mph pace. That's fast for this fat boy! It was a really flat loop along the river and he was taking it easy on me. I did like the route. It will be easy to add additional mileage and a few climbs to this loop.

Today .... my legs are sore!

1hour 15 minutes; 14.8 miles, 11.8 Avg Pace - Totally Spent

I rode over to my buddy G's and he proceded to punish me for 75 minutes on the road. Well, he really took it easy on me but I had a great 5th ride. I had another route mapped out this AM but this one was MUCH better. No traffic and it followed a lake.

My legs are spent. Just glad I made it home to a bowl of pasta and a homebrew! 

First Ride On My Road Bike

After the fiasco of trying to ride the road on my old MTB, I ended up with a new BMC Road Racer. Today I got to put her on the road. We had a blast!

I was having problems with the chain skipping in the cassette on my MTB. That (and pushing the fat tire and my "spare tire") made riding on Monday not very fun. For those reasons I am considering this my first real ride in 8 years. 

Time 47:32 - Distance 9.05 - Avg Spd 11.3 - Top Speed 32.8 - YEE HAW!

Anyway, I know this has been about brewing but I am adding riding because I kind of need to track my rides, it gives me more to ramble about, and I'm dang happy to be back in the saddle.   

After the ride I REALLY enjoyed a Tatum's Tale Pale AG and a Witty Daddy. Tatum's Tail made for a really nice sunset!

While drinking my hombrew I coudn't help but ask myself, "Why in the heck did you quit riding?!?!!" So, I do need to give a little thanks to the folks that got me back on the bike. My boys G & T for giving me so much grief. A new found Alaskan brewing/riding buddy from over at Mr. Beer Fans for talking about how good a beer tastes after a ride. And Stinky Momma, Stinky Baby, and the Stinky doggies ... just because..
