Dropped in on Epicurean Outpost - LHBS

Dropped in over at the Epicurean Outpost yesterday. Their was a group in the parking lot cooking up an all grain batch of amber ale. Just happened to have a couple of bottles of Lucky 7's IPA in the truck. I gave them as samples to the brewing crew and Dave the owner. It was well received!

It is an awesome IPA, In fact if I may say it is as good or better than a Dogfish Head 60....

I am not kidding, it is one wicked beer!!!!

Mmmmm... Cascade is strong on the nose. Earthy, Grassy goodness. Picking up some Amarillo as well. Slight Malt fights it way through the hop aroma.
Large medium size bubbled head. Just slightly off-white. Brilliant Bronze color. Just simply amazing clarity. Lots of raising CO2. Excellent head retention and lacing.
Wow this is an awesome tasting beer. Slight malt sweetness at the front. Cascades and Amarillo take over mid-tongue. By the finish it is all about the Hops. Finishes clean, with minimal Lingering bitterness. Starts to finish a little sweeter as it warms. Nice mouthfeel. Carbonation is perfect. Slight, ever so slight hot alcohol pokes its way through, but is carried by the wonderful balance of hops and malts. Hard to believe that this is a 1.078!
Overall I do not know if I have conveyed that I enjoyed this beer. If that is the case, let me just say that this is a friggin' AWESOME beer! I wish I could brew a Pale like this. I think that I would need to use bottled water to achieve this wonderfulness. My water is more conducive to Browns and Darks.

Still Slammed - No Brewing going On

Still too much going on to brew. Stinky Momma, Stinky baby, work, school, Stinky Dogs, etc ... Whew!

I did drop off a coupleof bottle of Choc-O-Haulic Milk Stout (B49) and received some great reviews. One of the tasters said it was one of the top 10 beers he has ever had. Wow! I need to brew a 5 gallon batch of this stuff.

I am going to try to take care of the batches in the carboys that I have ignored for almost 3 months. I am afraid they are going to be ruined.

General Update

Due to baby, work, and school I have not had time to do any brewing over the last few weeks. I am going to attempt to rectify that over the weekend.

Last night I stopped by the Epicurean Outpost to pick up a couple packs of S-23. I ended up cornering the owner for about an hour. Dave was extremely helpful and patient with my BS session. He was also kind enough to give me some of his homebrew to try. I walked out with 2 bitters, and IPA, a sorhgum stout, and dunkle. I can't wait to give them a try. These will be the first hombrews I have tried that are not my own.

The shop is having a brew session next weekend. I hope I can make it. They have some pretty cool looking set ups and I want to see how they work. It is great to have a local homebrew shop! 

I am hoping to brew a fake wit and a couple of lagers this weekend.

Good Meal , Good Beer, Good Friends - The Real Reason to Brew

Stinky Momma and I went to dinner last night with a couple of friends. The restaurant was in Limestone Cove,which is kind of out in the sticks. I was pleasantly surprised with the menu and the food. Actually, it was VERY good. The Country Cafe, with wild caught scallops (sea bass, roast duck, crab cakes) was anything but "country".

They are a BYOB establishment so I brought the recently kegged Bulldawg Lager (B48). It was a hit. The waiter (who also brewed) had a sample, the table next to us had a sample, and the table behind us had a sample. I am going to believe that it was the quality of the beer; not the novelty of my 3 gallon keg and the fact that the brew was homemade, that made it a hit. Old Grass Cutter (B39) and Knobby Tar Amber Ale (B47) were also sampled and well received.

I had a great meal, good company, and got to talk about brewing. It was a very nice evening.

Went Racing at Bristol.

My college roomie scored a pair of pit passes to the Saturday night race at BIR. Even though I am not a NASCAR fan I had a great time.

We arrived around 3:30pm and picked-up our passes. JD had some friends tailgating so we hung out with them a couple of hours before we went to the pits. I got to walk on the track, look in the cars, and see how short those drivers are. I even had my pic taken leaning on the Old No. 7 car in pit row. After the race started we went to the grandstands to get a better view. Pretty cool.

While JD was here he sampled some homebrew. He's a Bud Light drinker so the stuff I have in stock is a little heavy for his palette. He did like Old Grass Cutter (B39) but that is a lighter brew.

Next year I'll have a keg of AM Light (B20) ready for him next year.

M.T. Found and Bribed with Homebrew

I needed a bike rack for my truck so I decided to stop in an old riding buddy's shop to pick one up. What a mistake (not really)! After listening to him tell a few old stories to the gang in his store, we sat around amazed that no one lost a limb as a result of our exploits. I am still laughing, especially about how Gash Hollow got it's name.... He even called G.B. and they both started giving me crap!

We are going on a ride next week and I am completely prepared to be waxed then totally ridiculed. He was not impressed with my new riding gear and athletic form pictured in this self portrait.

I did run home to grab him a home brew sampler. It had Sean Thornton's Irish Red, Chocolate Rush Stout, Tatum's Tail Pale Ale PM; Addy Cake's Christmas Wheat, and Christmas Ale 2007 in the 6. The brew is really a bribe so he'll take it easy on me for a month or so. I doubt it works ...

Sunday Visitors, Food, and a Little Homebrew

The parents came by today. I put together a little Low Country Boil. I had an Amber AG or two while prepping the food. Not bad. Age has helped this little experiment. 

Dad and I had a couple of Sean Thornton's Irish Reds while watching the boil. He seemed to really like the beer. He said it was much better than my first shot at an Irish Red. Sean's is my own recipe and used East Kent Goldings. That is probably why it is better than the beer mix batch I made before. 

The boil was great. I need to add extra smoke sausage next time. Stinky Momma and Stinky Baby ate it all!

Later today my stout drinking buddy LC stopped by. We had a couple pints of Chocolate Rush. I really like this beer. So did he. I will brew this one again!

Today was a good day! 

Amber AG (B30) in the Bottle & Death of AM Light

Put Batch 30 in the bottle. Only had about 1.5 gallons worth of beer. I batch primed with 1.5 oz of corn sugar.

The FG was 1.007. This was better than I expected. This puts the ABV at 3.9%. Because this was an experiment I used tap water (big no no). I can taste the chlorine, not good. Anyway, we'll see how my first AG batch finishes. I I'm not expecting very much.

Finished off the last of AM Light watching basketball with a buddy. This was a good brew but was reaching the end of it's shelf life. I will brew it again.
