Good Meal , Good Beer, Good Friends - The Real Reason to Brew

Stinky Momma and I went to dinner last night with a couple of friends. The restaurant was in Limestone Cove,which is kind of out in the sticks. I was pleasantly surprised with the menu and the food. Actually, it was VERY good. The Country Cafe, with wild caught scallops (sea bass, roast duck, crab cakes) was anything but "country".

They are a BYOB establishment so I brought the recently kegged Bulldawg Lager (B48). It was a hit. The waiter (who also brewed) had a sample, the table next to us had a sample, and the table behind us had a sample. I am going to believe that it was the quality of the beer; not the novelty of my 3 gallon keg and the fact that the brew was homemade, that made it a hit. Old Grass Cutter (B39) and Knobby Tar Amber Ale (B47) were also sampled and well received.

I had a great meal, good company, and got to talk about brewing. It was a very nice evening.

Old Grass Cutter (B39) Revisited

 I had to take down a tree today. Afterward I wanted a cold beer so I grabbed this one out of the fridge. It had been sometime since I last tasted Old GC. I was pleasantly surprised on how well it has aged.

This beer was brewed on June 18th and bottles on July 10th. It was designed to be a light bodied ale for when your hot and thirsty. It did the trick.

 The brew had really cleared. It has almost a Corona flavor. A little skunky and sour, but not in a bad way. Talk about going down easy....

I don't know if it was the corn sugar to dry it out and lighten the body. It could have been the Tettnang hops. Maybe it was the fact that I was hot and thirsty and it was cold as ice. It hit the spot perfectly.

I will try it again for next summer as a lager.

Tastes good. Maybe a little funky after taste really but not bad. 

Old Grass Cutter (B39)

Put this batch in the fridge today. It was in primary 7 days, secondary 15 days, and conditioned 16 days.

This is my first attempt at a label beyond the old SD Brewery black and whites. I am pretty happy with the way this turned out.

 

I've had a test bottle in the fridge for a couple of days. I'll have a video pour a little later.

Grass Cutter Ale (B39) in the Bottle

Put this super light ale in the bottle tonight. I don't know if I can make a lighter colored beer and have it come out with any flavor. I drank the test jar and this one is still pretty flavorless. Hey, but that was kind of what I was attempting.

It was in the secondary for 15 days.

I batch primed with 2.5 oz of corn sugar that was boiled in a cup of spring water. I wanted a higher level of carbonation int this brew. It is designed to be chugged on a hot day.

The FG was 1.007. That gives Grass Cutter a nice little 4.5% .

I don't have anything fermenting. I may get a chance to brew a batch this weekend.

Fat Tire, Skinny Tire, and Where's the brewer?

Fat Tire has finally made it to Tennessee. I have been wanting to try this brew for some time. My expectations were high and I was not disappointed. Balanced, smooth, & toasty. The biscuit malt gives it a great finish. Not bitter ... just a great brew. I am glad it is only available in 22oz bottles because 12oz would just not be enough.

I have put in 3 short rides since I picked up my road bike 4 days ago. I am loving it. I need to find a couple longer loops. Right now they are in the 9.5 mile range. That is short distance on a road bike but I am WAY out of shape. That route also has plenty of climbs for this Clydesdale. I still need to find something around 15 miles. 

I've been really busy so, not much brewing lately. I will bottle my grass cutter ale this week. It will have been in the secondary 14 days this Wednesday. Maybe I'll get to something in the "mental brew pot" this week.  

 

Grass Cutter Ale (B39) to Secondary

Racked this VERY light ale to the secondary today. Added a bit of Polyclar as well.

Probably let it sit for another 2 weeks before the bottle.

 

Amber AG (B30) in the Bottle & Death of AM Light

Put Batch 30 in the bottle. Only had about 1.5 gallons worth of beer. I batch primed with 1.5 oz of corn sugar.

The FG was 1.007. This was better than I expected. This puts the ABV at 3.9%. Because this was an experiment I used tap water (big no no). I can taste the chlorine, not good. Anyway, we'll see how my first AG batch finishes. I I'm not expecting very much.

Finished off the last of AM Light watching basketball with a buddy. This was a good brew but was reaching the end of it's shelf life. I will brew it again.

Toothie's Cerveza PM (B32)

This was my second attempt at an all grain batch. As you can see it turned into a partial mash. I posted the brew-sheet on the recipe's page.

I don't know why I am calling this a cerveza. I guess because I used the centennial hops in Chino's Cerveza. I should really use lager yeast but holding 50F would be tough this time of year.

I added 2 lbs of gold malt extract after the boil. This was because my efficiency was only 45% and I needed extra fermentable sugar. Without the addition the ABV would have been around 2%. 

Big brew night. More to come.
