One of my friends asked me what it cost to brew a batch. This is a breakdown of the 5 gallon batch of Tatum's Tail Pale Ale.
Hopped Extract - $17.90
UME - $11.90
Water - $4.85
Grain - $2.80
Hops - $4.19
Yeast - $1.70
Misc- $2.00
Total - $45.34
A 5 gallon batch will yield about 48 12oz bottles. So, that's $.945 a bottle or $5.67 a 6 pack. I did add special yeast, grain, and extra hops. If I had followed the first batch exactly my cost would have been $37.44/$.73/$4.68.
Now, I learned a great deal on my trip to the brew shop. The same batch I just brewed from the brew shop would be about $35 or $.73 per bottle/$4.28 per six back.
They all beat Pete's @ $7.50 per 6.
Anyway I'm not brewing to save money. I really don't drink that much beer. When I do have a beer I want something that I like, that tastes fresh, and that I made. I also want to be able to play with ingredients and processes. I like giving someone a beer and hearing, "This is really good. Do you have anymore?" and "Can you brew this for me?".
